Frequently Asked Questions - Sept 2018
We are excited about welcoming students to Halifax Central Junior High.
These FAQs are designed to provide students and parents/guardians with a better understanding of our school.
What time is the school open in the morning?
The caretaker unlocks the front doors at 7:30 a.m. Students are permitted to enter at 8:30 a.m. and head to their lockers to get ready for the day. Homeroom starts at 8:50 with music starting at 8:46 as a friendly reminder. It is very disruptive when students arrive late, so please try hard everyday to arrive by 8:45 in the morning and 1:05 in the afternoon
On the first day of school during an extended homeroom, students will be given forms to be signed and completed by parents. Included you will find: Locker Agreement Rules & Regulations, Internet Acceptable Use Policy, Webpage Publishing, Student Media Release, School Cancellation as well as a lunch program form. You will also receive a completed student information form with all fields completed. Please add or correct any information and highlight any changes so we can have the most up-to-date information for our records. HCJH does not supply students with agenda books, but if you find it would be helpful, we encourage students to use them.
Are students permitted to bring their own electronic devices to school?
Yes. Examples of personal devices that students may bring are: ipods, ipads, smartphones and tablets. However, students who do not wish to bring their own devices are not required to as the school has classroom sets of tablets, ipads and chromebooks as well as a well-equipped computer lab that teachers may book for their class. Students are not permitted to use their own devices to text or make phone calls at any time during the instructional day. If you need to contact home, please ask to use the office phone or use their own phone in the office. Parents/ Guardians who wish to contact their child during the day are asked to contact the main office. Thank you in advance for helping in this area.
What will communication look like between school and home?
- HCJH uses a variety of methods to communicate effectively with students and their families. These include use of: school messenger, our school sign, Twitter, our school website, school newsletters, e-mail, phone calls and meetings. We have an open door policy, so feel free to drop by or call if you have any questions or concerns
Will their be opportunities to volunteer at HCJH?
Yes. Parents/Guardians are welcome and appreciated at HCJH. You can join the School Advisory Committee, the Home and School or you can volunteer to coach a sports team. Criminal Record check forms, Child Abuse forms and J forms for driving students to and from events can be found under the Parent section of the school webpage. Other special events like class trips and special events may also appreciate parent volunteers. Thank you in advance!
